Topic: FAQ WEP Crack

I have Windows Vista and want to test crack WEP. What are the possibilities?
Check the discussion about possibilities Windows Vista. If you use commercial platform don´t expect that someone will automaticaly port all Linux applications into Windows. Yes there are fanatics that port into Windows even special applications.  Not that the Windows user would save money. If GNU, Linux or free aplication under Windows works then the user can get used to it and lear how it works. This is the way how every tutorial is on airdump.cz written- If you use Windows and expect easy process I suggest USB WiFi adapter AirPcap. It is a hardware with modified firmware, it can do ijection and even monitor mode. It is by default supported in application Abel & Cain i Wireshark. It works perfectly and its price varies from  CZK 8 to  CZK 18 000 according to the version. Every AirDump Windows tutorial where Linux applications and Windows drivers are combined is experimental that means that if it works for us it might not work for you. With out problems will run AirPcap or Linux (with supported card).

I have turn on AiroPeek how long will I crack WEP?
AiroPeek is not WEP cracker. The packets are no problem, you need to know how to set the filtr and other program (for crack) otherwise the application itself is useless. Wildpackets don´ t support every WiFi card. To run a supported card you need to install a special driver (some drivers are in installation file of the application or at the product home page). Crack WEP key is described in the text Hacking WiFi – OmniPeek a Aircrack.

Is WiFi card Asus the right hardware for sniffing?
Even though Serial Monkey develops drivers for chipset rt2x00 (common on Asus cards) the answer is no it isn´t. Trouble-free chipset for "material collection" about which you can read a lot is Prism 2.5 and Atheros. Hardware on chipset Prism: Z-Com XI-626, Z-Com XI-325, hardware on chipset Atheros: CM-9, D-Link DWL-520 and other. At cards D-Link watch out for revisions! D-Link produces a number of revisions and therefore buying a D-Link WiFi card is not automaticaly smart. It depends on the chipset.

Is PAN10 and Z-Com enough for long distance?
No it is not. PAN10 is junk. Z-Com works steady but id not sensitive. Most sensitive card that you can use is CM9 and PCMCIA Orinoco Silver (but not orinoco found in 10 years old router). Both cards (PCMCIA, miniPCI) can be run in PCI reduction. There is a number of Atheros cards (even PCI) and new models come. Stay tuned and you will be updated.

Which PCMCIA/PCI reduction under Linux?
You can use lowend reduction for chipset Ricoh.

Is it possible to inject packets by Orinoco card?
Yes. Chipset Hermes in combination with hermesAP (runs only on older kernel 2.4). There are even older cards (Agere) but they are not described.

Can you catch IVS under Windows?
Yes. You can catch (passive) IVS in applications Wireshark (Ethereal), OmniPeek, AiroPeek, Airodump (windows version) or CommView for WiFi. Right card supported in mentioned applications (chipset) is  Hermes, Prism, Atheros, Realtek a nove i Intel PRO Wireless.

Can you inject with Aireplay in Windows?
No. Packet injection by Aireplay is possible only under OS Linux Edit: This possibility already exists (june 2007 – experimentaly). Details in text Packet Injection Windows XP)

Is Windows ideal for IVS collection?
If you can not run steady applications mentioned above than no. If you are not sitting ona a back bone, passive packet collection can take days or weeks, it will ocupy a lot of space on the disck and nobody can tell that in 200MB file will not be just 50 ivs. Use package Aircrack-ng or Linux. Supported card is neccessary no matter the operating system.

What Linux distribution is the right one for me?
Basicly it doesn ´t  matter which one you choose. It depends on your hardware, what do you like and what you will manage. Wide application support, hardware and user friendly is Ubuntu. Check airdump.net tutorials.
